Alfriston

Alfriston is a small village a twenty minute drive from Eastbourne. Its quaint streets and historic buildings make it a lovely place to explore, with plenty of walking paths nearby that offer stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

The entire village takes about 20 minutes to walk through and is well connected by little paths and lanes. During our walk, we passed the Alfriston Clergy House, a charming 14th-century timber-framed building with a traditional thatched roof.

Our next stop was Much Ado Books, located in the heart of Alfriston.  This independent bookshop is renowned for its charming atmosphere and extensive collection of new, secondhand, and antiquarian books. Housed in a former builder’s yard, the shop features a two-floor layout, a shepherd’s hut filled with vintage books, and a book bower offering bargain paperbacks. It’s a must-visit for book lovers exploring the village.

We grabbed lunch at the local deli, and sat down at the village green. It backs onto St. Andrew’s Church, the historic parish church. It’s a lovely spot where you can relax and enjoy views of the church’s impressive medieval architecture. The green often hosts local events and adds to the village’s charming atmosphere.

Exploring Alfriston is a wonderful way to spend part of your day—whether you’re drawn to charming bookshops, historic villages, or stunning countryside views.
