ONE day in
Berlin, Germany
Berlin was the first stop on my two-week Central Europe tour. I chose to book this trip through Intrepid, using credit from my previously canceled Canadian tour. I was eager to experience travelling with a guide and a group of people around my age, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity.
Berlin’s complex history is undeniable, and I believe it’s essential to acknowledge this when visiting such a significant location. During my stay, I made it a priority to visit the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the remnants of the Berlin Wall, both poignant reminders of the city’s turbulent past. Although I was already familiar with much of Berlin’s history, I didn’t anticipate how deeply these sites would affect me. Both the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the remnants of the Berlin Wall were moving and haunting in a way I hadn’t expected.

I also visited the Brandenburg Gate, the Victory Column, the Berlin Cathedral and the Tiergarten. Most of Berlin’s attractions cost money to enter, but are still beautiful to walk around. Although Berlin is full of culture and beautiful sights, I still prefer Munich as I think the city has a much more relaxed feel to it, as opposed to the hustle and bustle of Germany’s capital.

Berlin is home to many parks, but I’m particularly glad I visited the Tiergarten. This expansive area features a variety of attractions, including the Berlin Zoo, tranquil ponds, historic monuments, and beautiful English gardens. I found a comfortable spot beneath a tree where I could relax and jot down some thoughts for this blog. It was very peaceful.

My evening in Berlin wrapped up at Charlie’s Beach, a cozy hangout near the historic Checkpoint Charlie, once the crossing point between East and West Berlin. The area, covered in sand and lined with deckchairs, tables, and parasols, is surrounded by a variety of pop-up food stalls. I chose a Berlin classic, currywurst, which was delicious. It was also where our tour group shared our first dinner, offering the perfect opportunity to start getting to know one another.
